When I say : ” I need broccoli ” it means that my health is not so good.

My story with broccoli started few years ago, when I was with my family in a restaurant for lunch. I was looking to the broccoli on my mother’s dish – as if they were shouting : ” Halah eat us ! – I haven’t tried broccoli before ! ,but I know – as Biochemistry student – that broccoli is rich in vitamins and minerals . My mother noticed my eyes and immediately said : ” do you want to try them? “

I hate a habit in me that usually i don’t try any food easily :S , but something in me at that time pushed me to try !

and thank God i did try eating broccoli

Now, I confess that i am addicted to broccoli and I invented some dishes with broccoli

I want to take you in a tour to know more about broccoli and about vitamins and minerals that it contains.

Cominciamo – let’s start in Italian :S

Vitamins you can find in broccoli and their functions:

1- Vitamin A ( Retinol ):

I guess we all know how this vitamin is important for vision, growth, skin ,bone and teeth.

Deficiency of vit. A may leads to:

acne, dry hair, night blindness, growth impairment, isomnia.

2- Beta carotene: they are compounds that are able to be converted to vitamin A as the body requires.

3- Vitamin B2 ( Riboflavin ) :

Support energy metabolism, also good for vision and to provide you a good skin.

Deficiency of vit. B2:

blurred vision, depression, dizziness, hair loss, nervousness, numbness, sleepiness, loss of sensation and sensitivity to light.

4- Vitamin B6 ( pyridoxine ) :

Essential vitamin for amino acid and fatty acid metabolism and red cell production ( it is also essential for anemic ).

Deficiency :

Anemia, facial oiliness, dizziness, impaired wound healing, loss of appetite and also loss of hair.

5- Vitamin B9 ( folic acid ) : essential for all but very important to pregnant women, to prevent any mutation of DNA of the fetus in order not to lead to neural tube defects , so please make it a routine to eat any source for folic acid or even tablets for it..

Vit.B9 supports the synthesis of DNA and cell formation.

Deficiency may leads to:

Anemia, neural tube defects in fetus ( as what i mentioned before), diarrhea, headache, shortness of breath, insomnia and loss of  appetite.

6- Vitamin C ( ascorbic acid ) : who can live without vit. C ?! the most important vitamin and the most known one

when you have flu, the people immediately say : “drink vitamin C “

you’re tired : ” drink vit. C ” …..etc

Vit.C is very very important in the absorption of Iron and it works as antioxidant.

wondering what does antioxidant mean?

vit. C , A and E are working like antioxidants, which means that they fight the free radicals( toxins) that are produced after any biological process. So, they let’s say clean your body- detoxification .

Deficiency may leads to:

bleeding gums, impaired wound healing, joint pains, loose teeth and anemia – do you to impaired of Iron absorption.

7-  Vitamin K ( phylloquinon) :

important for production of clotting proteins and to regulate blood calcium.

Deficiency:

Excessive bleeding due to delayed in the formation of the blood clotting proteins .

Minerals that broccoli contains:

1- Potassium ( K ) :

plays an important rule in muscle contractions and nerve impulse transmission, maintains fluid and electrolyte balance.

and it is good for your memory, provide it to your kids to let them have a super memory. Bananas are rich in K.

Deficiency of K may leads to:

Edema, acne, depression, excessive water consumption , nervousness, muscle weakness, high cholesterol level and mental impairment.

2- Calcium ( Ca ):

for bone, teeth and blood clotting.

Deficiency:

tooth decay, rickets, irritability, brittle nails, cramps and for sure osteoporosis.

I think for people who don’t like milk or suffering from lactose intolerance – when your body can’t digest lactose due to the deficiency of lactase the enzyme which is responsible to break down the sugar lactose which found in milk and dairy product- can take Ca from broccoli or other sources like green beans and spinach.

3- Magnesium ( Mg) :

Support bone mineralization,  work as co-factor for several enzymes, nerve impulse transmission and immunity.

Deficiency leads to:

Confusion, anxiety, heart attack, insomnia, nervousness, muscular irritability and weakness.

4- Iron ( Fe) :

it is important because it is  part of hemoglobin – one of the red cell components and it is the carrier of oxygen.

Deficiency:

Sure Anemia,dizziness, headache, hair loss , depression and brittle nails.

5- Zinc ( Zn ):

part for several enzymes, help in the production of genetic material , transporter of vit.A, wound healing, sperm production and normal development of fetus.

deficiency:

Brittle nails, delayed sexual maturity, delayed wound healing, depression, hair loss, impairment growth, male infertility, night blindness, disorders in memory, eczema, high cholesterol, diarrhea, acne, depression and immune impairment.

Today is the 9th of ( thu al-heiia – the month number 12 according to Islamic calender ) which known as ” Arrafa day ” followed by Eid al-adh-ha the 10th day of the month..

I’m too late :’( 

i’m supposed to post it yesterday at least! i’ll give you the gist about this day

…..

during this month, around 4 days Muslims come from all over the world ( who can only ) to Makkah to do al-hajj ( pilgrimage )

this year 1432/2011 the Muslims who came from other countries ( I mean without counting Saudis ) are 1,828,195 Muslims with 183 nationalities..

Arrfa came from Arrafat ( it is a hill  called Jabal Al Rahmah – The Hill of Forgiveness, Mount Arafat in Makkah, where pilgrims stay, pray, supplications,recite the Qur’an, thank God for everything, ask God for forgiveness…….etc )

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: “There is no day when Allah sets free more slaves from Hell than the Day of ‘Arafah”

so, most of Muslims today are fasting, because one day can free us from the hell and all of the sins will be erased from last year, this year and next year.

in 10th/ 11th of Hijjra ( Islamic calender ) in Arrafa day, prophet Mohammed peace be upon him said the last sermon/ the farewell sermon ( we call it: khotbat al-wada’a )
and because prophet Mohammed didn’t say it for Muslims only, he said it to all people Muslims and non-Muslims, I decided to share it with you

Every time i hear it from someone or read it , it makes me cry.. and you’ll know why through reading his words…

THE LAST SERMON OF THE HOLY PROPHET OF ISLAM

(Peace and Love of Allah may eternally descend upon Him and His Pious Family and Companions)

“All praise is due to Allah, so we praise Him, and seek His pardon and we
turn to Him. We seek refuge with Allah from the evils of ourselves and
from the evil consequences of our deeds. Whom Allah guides aright there is
none to lead him astray; and there is none to guide him aright whom Allah
leads astray. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, the One,
having no partner with Him. His is the sovereignty and to Him is due all
praise. He grants life and causes death and is Powerful over everything.
There is no God but Allah, the One; He fulfilled His promise and granted
victory to His bondsman, and He alone routed the confederates (of the
enemies of Islam).

O’ People! Listen to my words, for I do not know whether we shall ever
meet again and perform Hajj after this year. O’ Ye people! Allah says, O’
people We created you from one male and one female and made you into
tribes and nations, so as to be known to one another. Verily in the sight
of Allah, the most honoured amongst you is the one who is most
God-fearing. There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab and for a
non-Arab over an Arab, nor for the white over the black nor for the black
over the white except in God-conciousness.

All mankind is the progeny of Adam and Adam was fashioned out of clay.
Behold; every claim of privilage whether that of blood or property, is
under my heels except that of the custody of the Ka’bah and supplying of
water to the pilgrims, O’ people of Quraish, don’t appear (on the Day of
Judgement) with the burden of this world around your necks, whereas other
people may appear (before the Lord) with the rewards of the hereafter. In
that case I shall avail you naught against Allah.

Behold! All practice of the days of ignorance are now under my feet. The
blood revenges of the days of ignorance are remitted. The first claim on
blood I abolish is that of Ibn Rabiah bin Harith who was nursed in the
tribe of Sa’ad and whom the Hudhayls killed. All interest and usurious
dues accruing from the times of ignorance stand wiped out. And the first
amount of interest that I remit is that which Abbas ibn Abd-al Muttalib
had to receive. Verily it is remitted entirely.

O’ people! Verily yor blood, your property and your honour are sacred and
inviolable until you appear before your Lord, as the sacred inviolability
of this day of yours, this month of yours and this very town (of yours).
Verily you will soon meet your Lord and you will be held answerable for
your actions.

O’ people! Verily you have got certain rights over your women and your
women have certain rights over you. It is your right upon them to honour
their conjugal rights, and not to commit acts of impropriety, which if
they do, you are authorised by Allah to separate them from your beds amd
chastise them, but not severely, and if they refrain, then clothe and feed
them properly.

Behold! It is not permissible for a woman to give anything from the wealth
of her husband to anyone but with his consent.

Treat the women kindly, since they are your helpers and not in a position
to manage their affairs themselves. Fear Allah concerning women, for
verily you have taken them on the security of Allah and have made their
persons lawful unto you by words of Allah.

O’ people! Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, has ordained to every one his
due share (of inheritance). Hence there is no need (of special) testament
for an heir (departing from the rules laid down by the Shari’ah).

The child belongs to the marriage-bed and the violator of wedlock shall be
stoned. And Reckoning of their (deeds) rests with Allah.

He who attributes his ancestry to other than his father or claims his
clientship to other than his master, the curse of Allah is upon him.

All depts must be repaid, all borrowed property must be returned, gifts
should be reciprocated and a surety must make good the loss to the assured.

Beware! No one committing a crime is responsible for it but himself.
Neither the child is responsible for the crime of his father, nor the
father is responsible for the crime of his child.

Nothing of his brother is lawful for a Muslim except what he himself gives
willingly. So do not wrong yourselves.

O’ People! Every Muslim is the brother of every other Muslim, and all the
Muslims form one brotherhood. And your slaves; see that you feed them with
such food as you eat yourselves, and clothe them with the clothes that you
yourselves wear.

Take heed not to go astray after me and strike one another’s necks. He who
(amongst you) has any trust with him, he must return it to its owner.

O’ people! Listen and obey, though a mangled Abyssinian slave is appointed
your Amir, provided he executes (the Ordinance of) the Book of Allah among
you.

O’ people! No Prophet would be raised after me and no new Ummah (would be
formed) after you.

Verily I have left amongst you that which will never lead you astray, the
Book of Allah, which if you hold fast you shall never go astray.

And beware of transgressing the limits set in the matters of religion, for
it is transgression of (the proper bounds of) religion that brought
destruction to many people before you.

Verily, the satan is disappointed at ever being worshipped in this land of
yours, but he will be pleased by obedience in anything (short of worship
that is) in matters you may be disposed to think insignificant, so beware
of him in your matters of religion.

Behold! Worship your Lord; offer prayers five times a day; observe fast in
the month of Ramadhaan; pay readily the Zakat (poor due) on your property;
and perform pilgrimage to the House of God and obey your rulers and you
will be admitted to the Paradise of your Lord.

Let him that is present, convey it unto him who is absent, for many people
to whom the message is conveyed may be more mindful of it than the
audience.

And if you were asked about me, what would you say?”

They answered, “We bear witness that you have conveyed the trust (of
religion) and discharged your ministry of Prophethood and looked to our
welfare.”

Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) lifted his forefinger
towards the sky and then pointing towards people said:

“O’ Lord: Bear Thou witness unto it.

O’ Lord: Bear Thou witness unto it.”

I guess now you know that:

1 – killing for no reason is prohibited.

2- Muslims are all brothers & sisters.. Arabs are not better than non-Arabs, white are not better that black…etc.

3- Treating women very well is a must.

4- we will never get lost cause we have the Holy Qura’an and prophet’s sunnah/ hadeeth..

May Allah accepted our fasting and prayers during Ramadhan.

The tenth month of the Islamic calender is Shawal, and the fisrt of this month Muslims celebrate this special occasion which known as Eid al-fitr عيد الفطر.

I promised my readers to write about Eid al-fitr.

so let’s our journey start ! cominciamo ( let’s start in Italian )

When does this occasion start?

Eid al-fitr, an Islamic holiday begins after some of Astronomers see the moon of Shawal . By the way, Ramadhan is not always 29 or 30 days it depends on the moon of Shawal if it was appear clearly in the sky, then we can say that this night is the last night of Ramadhan and in the next day Eid al-fitr will be. Eid is an Arabic word meaning “festivity,” while Fiṭr means “breaking (the fast)”. Other name for Eid al-fitr: Eid of Ramadhan, sure because it comes after the holy month.Usually, at the last week of Ramadhan Muslims start greet and congratulate each other by saying ” may Allah accept your fasting and praying ” or ” Eid sa’eed = happy eid ” or ” Eid mubarak = blessed eid” . At the end of the last night, Muslims provide charity which known as ( zakatu al-fitr ).

Salatu al-eid ( The prayer of this special occasion ) :

It is not a must but it is ( sunnah mo’akadah, which means: if some Muslims did it, then if the rest of Muslims didn’t do it it will be ok ) only two Rak’ah (= bowing ). Start from sunrise. What make it special that it has no calling of the prayer like any prayer during a day, but it has what we call it (Takbir ).

What do Muslims do during this day?

As I mentioned before the most important thing is the charity to poor people. Wake up early, take shower.  Muslims all over the world wear new clothes or the best one for this special occasion.Pray al-fajer prayer ( the first prayer of a day pre-sunrise prayer). Pray eid al-fitr prayer. Visiting families, relatives, neighbors…etc. Fasting during this day is prohibited. A lots of people give the children money we call it in Arabic ( E-deyah ) honestly not children only . You’ll see every one is happy old and young. Sweets, candies and gifts exchanged every where. Some countries provide special carnival, special offer for every thing, fireworks…etc.

What I wrote is so brief just to give you a simple idea about this special occasion. And sure because i promised you

Muslims! remember, what prophet Mohammad peace be upon him said : ” Fasting six days of Shawal after Ramadhan is like fasting the whole year ” << if you can why not! imagine the rewards

The translation of the full verse:

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.”  ( surat al-baqaraa , verse # : 185 )

What is Ramadhan?

It is the holy month and the 9th one according to the Islamic calender ,which lasts 29 to 30 day. The previous verse mentioned that in Ramdhan the holy Qur’an were sent down to guide the mankind. Ramadhan known as the month of : Qur’an(Because in Ramadhan it had been sent dawn and if you go any where in any Islamic country or even Muslims who are in non-Islamic country will read Qur’an more and more so Qur’an in every where on the earth will be read), mercy, forgiveness and the spiritual month. Ramadhan begins with mercy, its middle is full of forgiveness and ends with freedom of fire/hell by god’s willing. Simply, it is the month of fasting, it teaches Muslims to feel about poor people and remember them and to be more patient. During Ramadhan all the heaven’s or paradise’s doors are opened and the hell’s doors are closed.Unlike any other months, during Ramadhan all evils ( i don’t know how to say it in English but i’ll try to explain it ) become suspended, i mean they won’t be able todisturb any one while doing the worship, so now there are no evils .

When Ramadan arrives, everybody congratulates his neighbors and relatives. You can see the happiness all over.

Ususally people say: ” Happy Ramadhan or Ramadhan Mubarak (=blessed) .

Update 2-8-11: after the first day of Ramadhan, I confess that now i feel i’m different person, become better for sure thank God.

Update10-8-11: According to Islam presentation Committee in Kuwait, about 195 persons converted to Islam in the first five days of Ramadhan. Honestly, i’m NOT surprised day by day i hear or read about numerous number of people who converted to Islam.

You can see lanterns all over the city’s streets or in houses. Some people like to wear traditional clothes during Ramadhan. << these things are not from Islam, but it shows how people celebrate this month.

May be in some countries like: Egypt and some districts in Jeddah and Makkah ( I don’t know about other cities or countries) at the midnight you might hear some one as if he is beating the drums ( something like it ) and yelling: ” wake up sleepy…..”  to make people awake if they’re sleeping in order to remind them to have their ( sohur – the last meal before fasting not diner but like it ), but i think now there’s no more of (Musaharati ) – the man’s nickname.

Who are excused from fasting?

Sick, elderly, women who are having their menstrual cycle, pregnant or nursing and travelers . They will make up an equal number of days that they broke their fasting in, later- if they become healthy and able to fast. Kids begin to fast and pray from puberty, but some like to start before, any way they’ll get rewards too.

What do Muslims do during Ramadhan?

During Ramadhan, the Muslims know and believes that the rewards or we call it in Arabic ( Ajer “or” thawab) become doubled. So, Muslims well do a lot of worship beside fasting from daylight till sunset including: Reading the holy Qur’an, charity, not to insult or curse or even do or say something bad or bother someone ( No lying,fighting or having argument or cheat) , pray and ask God for forgiveness and to be free from the hell , pray sunnah ( additional prayers if he did it he’ll get extra reward if he didn’t he won’t get or lose any thing), pray salatu al-taraweh,this is a voluntary prayer that consists of reading the Quran during Ramadhan. In many mosques the whole Quran is read during Taraweeh prayers over the month. In some mosques it is read several times. Mainly most of Muslims and neighbors exchange dishes, visit each other and help each other. Some people like to do several dishes, dates and bought water and some juices in order to serve them to poor people and to eat with them.

Update12-8-11: I forgot to mention, that if a Muslim feed another fasting Muslims he will get a reward too, for feeding the other person

Some of the Muslims are lucky to do (Umrah- for more info about it click here) and the reward will be as if they did (Hajj or pilgrimage ) with prophet Mohammed peace be upon him.

Years ago, it was something normal to see Makkah- specially in AL-Masjed AL-haram where you can find the Ka’aba – full of Muslims in Ramadhan only( I mean as crowded as what you can see in the photo) , but now because- thank God- number of Muslims increases day by day you can see the holy Masjed full of Muslims every day.

For your information, only Muslims are allowed to inter Makkah. So can you imagine this huge number of Muslims from all over the world..?!

Update12-8-11: in the 2nd photo you can see Muslims are bowing to God and facing the Holy Ka’bah directed to the qibla ( where you direct ourselvies when we pray to God in every where in the whole world ).

How can Muslims break their fasting?

The fasting starts after salatu al-fajer till salatu al-maghreb << this is according to prayers’ time.

to explain more, from sunrise till sunset avoiding foods, drinking and sexual relations during fasting. we don’t care about the time as what we care about rewards and focusing in the Islamic ethics, that’s why we learn how to be patients. During Ramadhan you’ll notice how peoples’ personalities change to be better.

I wish if all the months of the year were Ramadhan

REMINDER to Muslims: Don’t forget before salatu al-maghreb and till you break your fast, it is a time for accepting your prayers by Allah’s willing

We break our fasting by  praying or what we call it saying ” Doa’a ” when we hear the calling of al-maghreb prayer (in Arabic it call -al-athan-  you can listen to it and read the translation click here ) start with eating dates, if it is not available we can break it with water, then we eat any thing. By the way, we call this meal/breakfast  ( al-fotur ).

Why dates?

When a person is fasting, the glucose ( sugar) level in his blood become low , so you need to rise it up in normal way.

I mean not to eat for example a candy which might rise it up too much..!

and not to surprise your stomach with any other food! in order to avoid making your stomach upset..!

Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him used to break his fast with 3 dates.

dates contain a good level of sugar and it is sufficient to rise it up again.

can you tell me how Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him knew that?!!

Laylatu al-qader :

It is the most holy night during Ramadhan, because during it the Qur’an were sent down to prophet Mohammed peace be upon him. All prayers by God’s willing will be accepted in this night. It is unknown to the mankind but we know it might be one of those nights : 21st , 23rd, 25th , 27th ,29th of Ramadhan.

Why it is hidden?

To make Muslims do more efforts and if we know when it will be exactly we might become lazy during the month and just make effort in this night only..!! and we’ll lose all the rewards. Mainly people say the weather of the day after this night become moderate not cold nor hot and there are another signs but i don’t know how to talk about it :S

After Ramadhan, The 10th month will begin which called Shawal which has a special occasion called Eid al-fiter( i’llwrite about it later by God’s willing).

Finally, I wish what I wrote was helpful for you to know more about Ramadhan if you’re not a Muslim.

Muslims, I wish you a happy Ramadhan,full of spirituality, forgiveness and mercy. May Allah(= God) accept our fasting,prayers and worship, Amin!

imagine the rewards that you will get, by God’s willing

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR):is an emergency procedure which is performed in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person in cardiac arrest.

I think now you know how CPR is very important to learn..

First you have to know that the technique is different for adult , kids and babies( depends on the age )

by the way it is important to be calm while you are doing it, i know it is hard but try to be calm ..^

Adult CPR

1- Check for response. ” Sir, can you hear me..? “

2- Check if he is breathing, look if his chest is moving and feel or hear if he is breathing .

3- Call for ambulance  . NOTE : if there’s another persons with you in the room don’t say call 911 or 997 or whatever the number is, to get an ambulance  !

No..! tell a specific person to call , just to be sure .

4- Give him two breaths then thirty chest compressions. The doctor – who had taught me CPR – said: ” it is much better to count loudly; because may be you miss number by mistake and if there’s another person with you he might help you”

Children CPR

1 – Check for response.

2-Do CPR , then call for help. ( remember use only one hand )

Babies CPR

1- check for response.

2- Do CPR. ( by your fingers )

3 – Call for help.

Multiple Sclerosis or MS is a chronic disease which thought to be auto-immune disease.The name multiple sclerosis refers to scars (plaques or lesions) particularly in the white matter of the brain and spinal cord, which is mainly composed of myelin.

In MS, the immune system attacks myelin. This damages the myelin and strips it off the nerve fibers, either partially or completely, leaving scars known as lesions or plaques. This myelin damage disrupts messages travelling along nerve fibers – they can slow down, become distorted, pass from one nerve fiber to another (short circuiting), or not get through at all.

Multiple sclerosis was discovered by Jean-Martin Charcot. ( a French neurologist and professor of anatomical pathology).

Causes of Multiple Sclerosis:

Unfortunately till now there’s no exact cause for MS, but researchers believe that a combination of several factors may be involved. These factors include gender, genetics, age, geography, and ethnic background.

- Some of them said it could be – as what i mentioned before – an auto immune disease (= the body attacks itself instead of attacking foreign objects) .

- Others said it could be from environmental factor , viruses or bacteria.

* NOTE: MS is not causing lethality and it is not inherited nor contagious .

Symptoms:

It depends on the effected area and it differs from one patient to  another – that’s why doctors some times face difficulties when they check for the disease – MS symptoms may interfere with other disease.

- common symptoms: numbness, fatigue, tingling , balance disorders, blurred or double vision,partial or complete blindness, headache and depression….

- rare : itching , Slurred speech and Sudden onset of paralysis ….

Treatment:

Unfortunately there’s no cure for MS, but patients with MS take some medication to decrease it.

e.g : beta-interferon.

* NOTE : vitamin D is very important for patients with MS. Vitamin B12 also is important.

Even for healthy people both vitamins are essential
the major source of vit.D from the sun.. vit B12 can be found in meats ( so vegetarian try to eat meat )

Diagnosis:

MS can be known via MRI or cerebro spinal fluid test-CSF
